Overview:
We partner with public-sector entities and regulated organizations seeking experienced FOIL Attorneys to support compliance-driven public records, transparency, and disclosure obligations. This role focuses on managing FOIL requests, advising on statutory requirements, and ensuring timely, accurate, and defensible responses in accordance with New York State and local regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
• Review, analyze, and respond to FOIL requests in compliance with applicable laws and timelines
• Interpret public records and transparency statutes and apply exemptions appropriately
• Coordinate with internal departments to identify, collect, and review responsive records
• Draft FOIL determinations, responses, and correspondence with requesters
• Advise stakeholders on disclosure obligations, redactions, and compliance risk
• Support appeals, litigation, or escalations related to FOIL responses
• Maintain documentation and tracking to ensure compliance with recordkeeping requirements
• Monitor changes in FOIL-related regulations and guidance
Qualifications:
• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; active New York bar admission preferred
• 3–7+ years of experience handling FOIL/FOIA matters, public records requests, or regulatory disclosure work
• Strong knowledge of New York FOIL statutes and public records compliance requirements
• Experience working with government agencies, public authorities, or regulated organizations preferred
• Strong writing, analytical, and organizational skills
• Ability to manage multiple requests and deadlines in a compliance-focused environment
Compensation:
• $80-120/hour depending on experience and market
