Louisiana Contract Attorney (Federal Court Admission Required)

A nonprofit organization is seeking Contract Attorneys licensed to practice in Louisiana federal courts for an ongoing remote opportunity supporting high-impact habeas and detention matters.

Details:

  • $100/hour
  • Ongoing contract anticipated to last 5+ months
  • Part-time schedule: approximately 15–30 hours/week at the candidate's discretion
  • Fully remote aside from any required court appearances

Requirements:

  • Active admission to practice in one or more Louisiana federal courts
  • Habeas corpus experience strongly preferred
  • Immigration experience is not required
  • Candidates with significant criminal defense experience are encouraged to apply, even without direct habeas experience

Key Responsibilities:

  • File and litigate habeas corpus petitions on behalf of clients detained out of state
  • Conduct emergency legal research and draft filings under tight deadlines
  • Interview and counsel clients and families with sensitivity to trauma and crisis
  • Coordinate with local counsel, public defenders, and advocacy groups to gather supporting documentation
  • Appear in court as needed
  • Maintain detailed records of case activity and communications
